On Wednesday 29th November 2017, Richard Harrington MP took students from Watford to meet the House of Commons Speaker, Mr John Bercow MP.
Every year, Richard Harrington MP organises a debating competition for Watford’s schools. This year, 8 local schools took part and Watford Boys Grammar were crowned the champions.
Students took part in 4 knock out rounds and debated a range of topics, including Brexit, Donald Trump and Censorship.
As a prize for winning, students from Watford Boys Grammar were given a trophy, INTU vouchers and an opportunity to meet the House of Commons Speaker!
5 students had tea in the House of Common, and a Q&A with Mr Speaker. They asked him about his role, rebuilding Parliament and what he’s most proud of in his career.
Richard (who organises the competition and the prize) said:
“Congratulations again to Watford’s Debating Champions. I think it’s so important to engage young people with politics and a debating competition is great way to boost confidence and gain public speaking experience.
Mr Speaker also does a lot to encourage debating at schools, and so he was very pleased to congratulate the boys at Watford Grammar School.”
