Watford MP Richard Harrington is giving his backing to the EU Referendum Bill as it has it is debated in the House of Commons on Friday 5th July.
The Bill, introduced by Conservative MP James Wharton, seeks to legislate for an In/ Out referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, before the end of 2017 if a Conservative Government is returned in 2015.
If the Bill is successfully passed it will give the British public the chance to vote on this important issue in almost 40 years. Holding the Bill in 2017 will provide the chance for the Prime Minister to negotiate better terms and balances of power, in the interests of the British public, to give people a clearer basis on which to make their choice about Britain’s membership.
The Conservative Party are on the only party offering people this choice and a chance to have their say on whether or not Britain should remain in the EU.
Richard Harrington said:
“This Bill gives people the chance, and for me and many others the only chance they have ever had, to have their say on Britain’s membership of the European Union.
“I am proud as a Conservative to support this Bill and to represent the only Party offering the British public the chance to have their voice heard.
“It is right that we first give David Cameron and other Ministers the chance to re-negotiate our relationship with the EU, so that when people go to the polls they have a much clearer idea about what a continued membership would look like.
“I know from my correspondence and talking to people in Watford, that this is an important issue for many people and one that has now been debated for decades. I strongly believe that by 2017, under a Conservative Government, we will be in the right position to offer people the chance to vote on an In/ Out referendum; which will be based on renegotiated relationship, and give people a real choice to have their say for the first time in 40 years and I will continue to support this Bill to ensure that it becomes a reality.”
