Watford MP Richard Harrington has met with and congratulated a team of young people who, working with Herts Fire and Rescue Service, have helped to transform facilities for local charity DRUM.
DRUM provides day services for adults with sensory or physical disabilities and now, thanks to the HFRS team, they have two fully redecorated offices and a revamped patio area which members can use.
HFRS are responsible for delivering the Princes Trust scheme in Watford, which helps local young people build skills and employment projects over a period of 9 weeks. Two of those weeks are a community placement, the first week of which the team spent bag packing at Tesco and approaching local businesses in order to raise £500, and the second week using those funds to transform DRUM.
With support from both Clements and B&Q Watford who donated furniture and materials, and a week of painting, fitting, and replanting, DRUM now have a refurnished centre and new computer room for their users. Mr Harrington took part in the official handover earlier this afternoon, and heard from users firsthand how pleased they are with the team’s efforts and new facilities at the community centre.
Richard Harrington MP said: “When HFRS contacted me about the programme, I immediately thought of DRUM as they do such valuable work locally. I’m so glad to see it has worked out and the students have done an incredible job. I’m looking forward to seeing them all again in Parliament in a few weeks time, and full credit to Joanne Todd of HFRS who has worked tirelessly to get the programme of the ground”
Sarah from DRUM said: “Having the Prince's Trust do this for DRUM is just fantastic, it takes the pressure off our team and gives the young people an opportunity to get involved with local projects and experience community volunteering. Our members always enjoy having the youngsters around and it certainly livens up the place!”
