Disability Confident

In support of the Government's Disability Confident campaign, Richard Harrington MP wants to help employers in Watford, who wish to be more inclusive, and encourage them to sign up to the Disability Confident scheme which helps employers open up their workforce to disabled people.

Over 7 million people (17.5%) of working age in the UK are disabled or have a health condition. Disability Confident is about getting employers to think differently about disability and to take action to improve how they attract, recruit and retain disabled workers. You can become Disability Confident by recruiting and retaining disabled people and people with health conditions for their skills and talent.

The new scheme has been developed with both employers and disabled people in mind. You can sign up and be at one of 3 levels (Committed, Employer, and Leader).

What’s in it for your business?

Attracting, retaining and valuing disabled employees and those with long term health conditions can benefit your business by:

  • enabling you to draw from the widest possible pool of talent
  • enabling you to secure high quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working
  • saving time and money on the costs of recruitment and training by reducing staff turnover
  • helping you keep valuable skills and experience
  • reducing the levels and costs of sickness absences
  • improving employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that you treat all employees fairly.

More than 3,800 businesses have signed up to become Disability Confident so far including local employers, Warner Bros, Watford Community Housing Trust, AP Security and Sigma Pharmaceuticals.

Richard Harrington MP says:

"On visits to businesses in Watford, I've had the pleasure of meeting so many passionate and driven disabled people who've been given a chance, and gone above and beyond what the employer expected. I am supporting the Government's campaign because I want more employers to have the confidence to offer these chances, and reap the benefits. Being Disability Confident could help you discover someone your business just can’t do without! "

Dan Dark, Managing Director and SVP Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden says:

“The Disability Confident programme offers a practical framework to help businesses employ people with a health condition.  We are delighted to have become members and will be working alongside partners in the community to commit to the programme.”
